Joye Schwartz was born in Elgin, Illinois and led a creative life right from the beginning. At age 8, she learned to play piano, violin, and learned to knit. She was surrounded by a family that constantly constructed handmade items, from quilts, to ceramics, to paintings to jam filled donuts. In high school, Joye taught herself the viola and became a prize winning string player at the age of 16.

Joye attended Northwestern University and University of Denver, where in 1977, she received her M.A. in Audiology as well as her instructional II certification in education of the deaf which she still holds in Pennsylvania. For the following 10 years, Joye worked as both an educational and clinical audiologist. During that time, she developed and implemented an educational audiology program for the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, an impedance and audiology screening program for the Temple University Woodhaven Facility, was the primary teacher for a non verbal preschool class, worked as an early childhood audiology consultant for the Federal Infant Initiative for Montgomery County, was employed as a clinical audiologist for Drs. Gold & Stanek , and worked as a clinical audiologist in Herb & Assoc. in Philadelphia, selling and customizing hearing aids. Joye, in 1978, had her research “The Role of the Educational Audiologist in Montgomery County” published in the “The Journal of the Pennsylvania Speech and Hearing Association.” Joye also taught masters level nursing students at Gywnedd Mercy College in Springhouse, Pa.

Then in 1987, Joye started her studies in painting, drawing, and ceramics at the Academy of the Fine Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art , Cheltenham Art Center, and privately with Bill Scott & Rose Naftulin. In 1999, Joye began to teach high school and middle school Art and developed new studio and art history programs in Stern Hebrew High School, Saligman Middle School, and Torah Academy High School. Joye was also an art history lecturer for the Jewish Community Center in 2003.

During this time, Joye founded and worked for 5 years in the Arts in the Park Festival in Elkins Park, Pa., which has developed into a juried art festival drawing around 6000 people annually.

From 2008 through 2009, Joye was co-owner of a fine art company, Affordable Luxurees LLC.

Joye is currently specializing in impressionist like portraits and still life paintings, and has shown in local galleries ,juried and invitational shows, and private collections around the world, as well has been commissioned to paint portraits and ceramic murals. Being creative is still very much a part of her life as she is presently a member of a jazz group. Joye is learning to play jazz violin after playing in chamber music groups for the past 30 years. She is also proficient in American Sign Language, knitting and sewing and has designed and constructed dozens of original fabric pieces.  A current writing project for her is a vegetarian cookbook entitled “Joyeful Recipes” in which she will provide watercolor illustrations and yummy recipes. As with all creative people, reading is a passion for her, her favorites being fiction and anything relating to physics. And finally, to be a collaborative part of the Philadelphia art community, Joye is an active member of Art Sisters, a small, juried group of woman artists that support each other through gallery shows and meetings.
